I’ve never been one for wearing a bra to bed.  I’m a pyjama gal who likes my comfort and that typically comes care-free and braless.  Whether you’re busty or less so, if you’re just chilling out around the house or sleeping, it’s pretty liberating to ditch the bra off duty.

Having said that, lately I’ve found myself pondering the idea of a sleep bra.  With a heavy bust that has a tendency to head east-west under the covers, I’m finding settling to sleep increasingly annoying.

Wearing a bra for bed is quite a popular regime for many women the world over, so I was surprised to find there’s actually not that much out there specifically for sleeping in.  Are people seriously donning their sultriest wired bras to bed?

While there’s no medical prerogative to wear a bra at all, we’ve come to dote on the security and support bras give.  Underwiring can do magical things for a bust but it’s not so desirable for sleeping in since any hard material will likely dig, irritate and put pressure on where you lay.  This is neither comfortable nor healthy for anyone interested in a good night’s sleep.

My search for suitable slumber attire led me to Royce Lingerie.  I haven’t worn a wire-free bra since my teenage years which is probably why I’ve never looked into the brand before, and if I’m honest, my Mum’s soft cup preference tarnished my opinion of wire-free bras long ago.  So taking a look at Royce’s latest brochure was a refreshing change of direction for me.

Royce are actually celebrating 25 years in the industry this year, and it’s clear why.  They’re market leaders in their expertise, solely specialising in wire-free lingerie that spans from teen bras to nursing, mastectomy to sport.  And excitingly, their SS16 collections are set to challenge your opinion of the wire-free granny reputation.

Royce sent me their most successfully selling bra: the Blossom.  It is technically a nursing bra but it’s flexible design makes it the perfect style for sleepwear too.  I received the continuity colour-way, black and white spot, but this collection comes in a variety of fashion designs, with my personal favourite look – striped soft pink Candy Blossom – coming later this spring.

Blossom’s sizing is quite unusual in that it’s collectively sized: C/D/DD, E/F/FF and G/GG/H with respective band sizes from a 32 to a 40 back.  Being a usual 30H these days, I was initially cautious about wearing a larger band but I actually found the 32 G/GG/H size to be a perfect fit. The deep band feels snug and comfortable on the loosest hook, and due to the stretchy nature of the fabric, the cups seem to fit like a glove.

Blossom is a bra but its design is more like a bralette.  However, the addition of side sling supports create a cup-like fit, and clever central ruching allows you to change up the look from a full on crop top to a more plunging bra shape.  It’s innovative and really quite clever.

The soft jersey feel fabric is what makes Blossom so ideal for sleeping in.  Its cotton rich content makes for a comfortable wear that’s naturally breathable, which is an important factor for me as I can’t stand waking up in sweat.  A deep band of elastic running under the cups provides a fantastic level of support too, helping it to stay put so it doesn’t ride up or curl under.

As Blossom is foremost a nursing bra, it does mean you have clips for the detachable top part of the cups.  This is a little annoying and it means the straps aren’t perfectly smooth and there’s that little bit of hardness, but it doesn’t bug me too much.  They don’t detach readily or particularly get in the way so it’s an aspect I can work with.

Blossom is a lovely option as a general casual bra, for sleeping in or lounging around.  Due to its design that you can play around with, it can look how you want it to.  It’s cute, comfy and already my first and favourite wire-free bra.
