MEN’S STYLE | A Smart Casual Look for Valentine’s Day
Hands up who makes the extra effort for Valentine’s day? And I’m asking the fellas, not the ladies! Of course it depends how your night will be spent; wining and dining or going out for a curry and a movie. But the premise is the same: how dressed up (or down) do you go to make an effort without looking like you made too much of an effort?

I’ve been with the same dude for 20 years now so what do I know about men, dating and their fashion. Well, I’ve been on enough ‘dates’ with him to know the difference between casual and smart and what’s appropriate when, having dressed up for awards do’s and kept it low key for cinema trips. Personally, as much as I like a suit, keeping it pretty smart-casual is more my style these days.
But whatever your style, being able to totally relax and be comfortable in what you’re wearing is paramount. A smart-casual look is sharp with a softened edge, allowing your personality to do the talking.
Very offered me the chance to create an exclusive V by Very outfit for the main man in my life. Considering how we’ll likely spend Valentines together this year (probably in Prezzo with the mini man), Mr C and I put together this outfit as a super relaxed mens date look.
Nothing beats a quality pair of jeans for that ultimate smart-casual style, and the beauty of fit and garment shape means even a laid back look can be fine tuned to a smarter appearance. Sean said these jeans feel really comfy. The V by Very Straight Fit Jeans are a rugged design with a distressed effect applied to the denim so they have a really cool feel about them. The straight leg has a slightly loose drape with ample room around the pelvis, but maintains a well fitting shape that flatters the leg. The regular leg is still pretty generous in length so you could turn them up a little if you’re wearing trainers, otherwise they style well with a pair of casual leather lace up boots.
The Textured Stripe Knit Jumper in the same V by Very Collection is a lovely crew neck fine knit that layers nicely with a t shirt or shirt beneath, which is just ideal for this time of year. In the navy shade, the contemporary textured pattern gives the light handle fabric an edgy style that looks effortlessly cool. The XL fits perfectly with a gently relaxed shape lending it a classic look that’s flattering and easy to wear. I think it really o-ordinates with the vintage wash jeans, nailing that smart-casual look.
Of course at this time of year you definitely need a coat, so a lightly padded jacket that doesn’t add any bulk finishes off the whole look. The black urban styled Padded Tech Jacket from V by Very’s own line, protects from the elements and is full of features. The hooded jacket fastens right up to the neck with a zip and there’s adjustable wrist straps so the cuffs fit nice and snugly. With two generous front pockets and a pocket on the arm, there’s no shortage of space for phones and a wallet. While it’s more of a casual design, the jacket’s clean lines ensures the outfit stays modern and stylishly comfortable.
Very’s own exclusive label, V by Very, is really good quality clothing. I’ve personally been a customer of Very for several years now (and this is something I’m saying off my own steam) but I love shopping with them. Their fashion isn’t ridiculously priced and wears like any premium designer brand, so I’m always confident I’m spending my money wisely. Another bonus is their quick delivery which is pretty convenient if you’ve recently set that Valentine’s date and you need a sharp outfit yesterday.
