Colour Block Swimwear | Freya ‘Bondi’ Bikini

April 12, 2015

Sports Luxe is a massive trend this year and it appears swimwear totally rocks the look.  While it isn’t a style for the faint hearted, colour blocking turns up the volume at level awesome – emphasising curves and announcing your arrival.

When Freya released images of their new Bondi swim collection, lingerie buyers and social media went bonkers.  Bondi is undisputedly one of Freya’s best looking swimwear designs in a long time.  Its intense colour and sporty design makes for one eye catching and seriously high octane bit of beach gear.

The Bondi line – a purple and neon pink colourway with black contrast lines – encompasses a range of 3 tops, 3 bottoms and a skirt, so there’s plenty to mix and match.  Perhaps the hottest piece where the collection really comes into its own is the D-G Longline Bra – a well designed, sporty top for those lucky to fit it.

Pretty much out of child-like want, I first tried the Longline Bikini Top (£40) in a 30G, willing it to fit.  Not surprisingly it didn’t, and that bummed me out.  While I couldn’t get to wear it, I did find something from trying this size; that the longline panel didn’t look quite deep enough which makes it look somewhat odd in the larger cup.  Anyway.   Never have I wanted smaller boobs so much.

I exchanged the longline for the Sweetheart Bikini Top (£34) in a 30GG, which pertains the same colour blocking pattern as the longline, just without the extra bit underneath, and has the pink continuing up the straps.

I paired the bikini top with the awesome High Waist Brief (£24) in a Medium for a sporty but kinda retro feeling look.  The result is a totally wearable two piece, perfect for chilling out on the sand or, in more my style, adventures in rock pools and jumping the waves!

Let’s talk fit.  The bikini bra, being a 30GG, fits just as well as my ‘usual’ 30GG in Freya.  Defined as a sweetheart style, the neckline is similar to a balcony but has more of a curved, plunging shape.  The central gore is in that awkward position for me, where it’s neither low nor high enough, so there’s slight floatation over my breast tissue.  Another interesting point is the band which narrows to the clasp.  I would have liked a deep band with a wider clasp, like you’d find on some swimsuits, to really make sure it’d keep up with its support.

The deep brief shorts look fantastic and are incredibly flattering.  The panelling is well proportioned and just delivers that fluorescent punch.  The seams again remind me of a wet suit which is a great style for swimwear, and the deep waist band is as comfortable as the whole fabrication.

Irritatingly, I feel like the cut isn’t deep enough around the hip as they kept riding up into my butt, and this is just me wearing them about the house and outside, not actively on the beach.  I like my pants, high waist or not, to have decent bum coverage as wedgies aren’t the prettiest of looks.

Freya’s Bondi just screams scuba diving off Australia’s East coast and it’ll look pretty sharp on my own British North East coast beach in the coming months.
