Where outfits of the day are concerned, your wedding attire really is the ultimate OOTD. 

Tons of you have been complimenting me on what I wore on my wedding day so I figured a blog post would be a great way of sharing the love and of course the vital details where to shop!  I felt like a queen on my big day and this is how I did it.

The Dress

I quickly realised what style of dress I wanted to wear.  Wearing lots of full length gowns for modelling  probably influenced my decision to run away from tradition and move toward something similar in style to what I’d wear normally.  I tried a few dresses on in a boutique for an idea, and then took the less conventional route onto eBay where I ended up finding my dream dress – a still current collection from a bridal shop’s sample sale – for a bargain price.

I wore a 50s style tea length wedding dress designed by British brand, True Bride. The dress was sleeveless with a sheer illusion neckline detailed with a jewel necklace and featured a fully fashioned buttoned back closure and a full, heavy tulle circle skirt embellished with dozens of beads.   It was the perfect style for me as it had that fairytale volume without being an ankle length ball gown, with the hem finishing on my calf which was also the perfect length to flash my statement shoes.

With wedding dresses it’s recommended you size up, so as a UK 14 I purchased a 16.  It was in reality far too big for me, which caused me no end of stress with fittings and adjustments, leading me to question, on more than one occasion, why you should size up in the first place.  So, I had my dress taken in at the waist and across the back by a seamstress.

The Petticoats

I loved the shape of my dress but desired a little more oomph so I started to look at under-skirting.  Shopping for tea length petticoats was not an easy task.  The majority of petticoats on the market are around 26 or 27 inches, and with the skirt of my dress measuring 32″, I realised I needed longer.  In the end I found 30″ lengths on Lindy Bop, which seemed to be the best option.

Lindy Bop very kindly offered to send me some pieces for me to wear, including two petticoats, which I decided to double up and wear together (full review to follow).  I went for the one size 8-14 in white and fairytale pink to co-ordinate with my pink theme, and I found the 30″ the perfect length as it provided volume without exposing the petticoats.

The Shrug

I was certain I wanted something to cover my arms in case the weather wasn’t so warm, and the little pink shrug sent to me from Lindy Bop was exactly what I was looking for.  It was a cropped length with three quarter sleeves in a soft viscose knit that felt like cotton, and the large size was a generous, but not overly so, fit.  The bubblegum pink sold it for me as it looked great with my pink shoes.  It was just a really easy buttonless cardigan to thrown on throughout the day and looked so cute.

The Shoes

I actually wore two pairs of shoes on the day: jewelled pink heels and hot pink wellies!  My Asos shoes were a slingback, medium stiletto heel which meant they were super comfortable to walk around in and I had no aisle walking fears.  In a vibrant, almost neon, rose pink, they made a fantastic talking point, especially since the cropped cut of my dress called for an amazing shoe.  The pointed toes and t-bar were decorated with iridescent stones that had an eyecatching sparkle complimenting my decadent dress.

My hot pink wellies were just a cheap pair of Dunlop boots and were a fun way to play around with my look.  I wore them when we went off into the woods for our intimate photos and then again when we went to our farm location reception.  My mum wasn’t so keen on the wellies, preferring my crazy-sparkly heels, despite my tendency to disappear into the grass in them.  I didn’t wear them for my actual wedding ceremony but they were a fun and essential part of the big day.

The Bra

After much deliberation and playing around with strapless bras I knew my Wonderbra Refined Glamour Ultimate Strapless was still the right bra for me.  As my dress had a transparent mesh top it was effectively backless, so I needed to make sure that whatever bra I chose would go unseen.  The Ultimate Strapless performed the best as its design meant the low back remained hidden behind my dress.

This bra was also perfect for its boosted style which gave me a great lift where I needed it and maintained a lovely rounded and brought together shape that suits my close set bust.  I would have preferred the Refined Glamour in white rather than the creamy shade it is as it meant I had to sew and pin it inside the bustier part of my dress so that the colour would never peep out and show, which it did tend to do during my fittings.  Once sewn in though, it was spot on and did the job fantastically.

The Hosiery

I was adamant I was going to wear stockings on the wedding day but my plan ended up getting canned.  I found the Cervin stockings I’d first lined up weren’t going to work, as the woven fabric, which liked to wrinkle, didn’t wear well with my open back shoes.  Instead I was able to find some tights from John Lewis that were essentially the same polka dot pattern, obviously not stockings, but did have stretch, which sold it for me.  Unfortunately I kinda regretted it when I’d managed to ladder them before I’d even put my dress on, and at the end of the day they were obviously so bad I binned them.  Lesson learnt?  Make sure your hosiery’s a quality brand!
