Mamalicious Maternity : Cathy Tikka Coat

December 1, 2016

Good maternity clothing isn’t the easiest to find.  While many of the highstreet fashion stores carry maternity lines, they’re typically quite limited, and I’ll admit I’ve not had the best of luck finding exactly what I want.  Being a winter mummy-to-be means that I not only need to buy bump friendly versions of my favourite clothes, but invest in a pregnancy friendly coat too – not the simplest of tasks so I’ve found.

When Yummy Mummy Maternity asked me to review from their winter coats range it was a strike of luck.  In the midst of several failed purchases from Asos, Dorothy Perkins and New Look, I found myself with a host of new options from the specialised online store and I quickly found my perfect coat right there by maternity label, Mamalicious.

Yummy Mummy Maternity sent me the Mamalicious Cathy Tikka Jacket, size XL(16)/£85

The Mamalicious Cathy Tikka is a stylish, polyester mix coat designed to cater from bump and beyond.  Featuring a clever front detachable panel, it provides the additional room to accommodate a baby bump, and removes for normal wear after pregnancy.

An easy to wear jacket, the navy blue Cathy Tikka is all about functionality and great looks.  For some reason not many coats have hoods; they’re usually reserved for the more casual jacket and almost never on a smart coat.  The Cathy Tikka has a fluid style that blends both a smart aesthetic and casual – with the practicality of a hood, side pockets and the sleek fit of a belt, it’s a coat that looks great and delivers.

I like to size up in outer wear so opted for the largest size, the XL.  Translating to a UK16, the coat comes up with a generous fit, which is great for a developing figure and making sure you have plenty room for big winter jumpers and feeling comfortably roomy.

The mid thigh length Cathy Tikka coat makes light work of wrapping up warm.  The simple, box shaped hood is lovely and spacious so it’s big enough to actually keep your head dry, and the zipper runs right up to the neck providing a high level of protection from the elements – perfect for when the rain’s battering down the hatches!

The optional front panel attaches onto the full zip with ease, providing a quick and simple remedy for when you’d otherwise outgrow the coat.  The panel adds to the contemporary style while still looking very much part of the design, a quality that really makes this coat work for your money.

Even though I’m now 26 weeks pregnant I can still wear the coat with the panel removed quite happily, so I anticipate that as my waistline expands over the coming few months, I’ll be able to attach the panel and carry on wearing it with ease.  I can create shape and add texture by tying the belt above my bump, with or without the added panel, and I think this is an attractive bonus to its style.

The coat’s neat fit makes it an unusual style you wouldn’t normally see in maternity-wear.  Woollen style coats in such a detailed design are usually reserved for general fashion, maybe because they’re tricky to get right for the pregnant figure and it’s easier to provide wrap around options that don’t have such tailoring.  I spent a lot of time trying to find something as unique, fitting and wearable as this coat, which makes me value it all the more.

The Cathy Tikka coat is gorgeous; both the design and colourway co-ordinates with my current wardrobe that allows me to dress in a smart-casual manner.  Its deep navy blue shade goes perfectly with country casual browns – it looks so cute with my across body bag swung over paired with my knee high cleated boots.  I definitely feel like I’ve found a coat that’s ‘me’.  I feel confident heading outside knowing I look great, despite being relegated to crutches (likely for the rest of my pregnancy) and at least I can feel all snuggly and smart in my bump friendly coat.
