Dressing a curvy figure can be a tricky task.  I for one am aware of my lumps and bumps, and know I look my best by celebrating my hour glass frame rather than hiding it away beneath unflattering clothes (which I am undeniably guilty of doing.)

Fashion from the 40s and 50s era seemed to get dressing just right: everything was well fitted, worked around the waist and looked effortlessly feminine, regardless what body shape you naturally had.  Whether you had an hour glass, pear or apple shape, dresses looked good.

Dovima is a fashion brand inspired by the glamorous days of ladies past.   Named after 1950’s American top model, Dovima, the brand Dovima emulate the model’s classical style with beautiful dresses and playsuits fit for a true pin up queen look.

I was recently lucky to win one of my favourite Dovima designs and was sent the exquisite Thorny Rose Pencil Dress.

Having no prior experience of Dovima’s sizing I was unsure what size to go for.  Usually  a size 12, I was concerned about the fit around my bust, and so I was recommended I try a 14.

The LOOK

The Thorny Rose print is a pretty design full of colour.  An open necked and cap sleeved style, the dress is styled to hug the figure.   It is fitted with a deep back zip and finished with a belt at the waist.  The fabric glides over the hips, with gathering over the tummy, while the hem finishes just below the knee which helps create elongation of the leg.

The FIT

The fit of the dress is cut to hug the figure so is super flattering.  The cotton rich fabric is impressively thick and substantial which I’m inclined to say makes it less of a Summer dress and more appropriate for cooler weather such as now.  The slight stretch in the weave means it’s easy to put on and hangs well.

My THOUGHTS

The Thorny Rose dress is a gorgeously flattering option for those who like the sophisticated appeal of the 50s style but don’t want to wear a full skirt.  It feels super comfy and you can tell by the look and feel it’s a quality garment that’s going to last.

Going up a size to a 14 worked best for me, as it meant that extra bit of room for my naturally wide hips and big boobs.  Personally I like wearing a little cleavage so would prefer the neckline to be deeper but it’s not a deal breaker.

I would also smooth out the front and remove the heavy pleating which falls over the tummy – it may be a comfort to some but I feel it adds bulk where you don’t really want it.  The belt is a fab addition to the design and aids that nipped in at the waist look – an essential for the perfect hour glass!
